Yes and no. The katana itself actually cuts through things that a normal katana couldn't. The energy swords are used more for ranged targets, since I find guns distasteful.

Devil Trigger is more of a power boost, but there are instances where it can unlock an amplified version of one of the "fancy sword tricks" I already have. So technically yes.
