The pit of his stomach doesn't just sink, but caves in at that last part. It's true: on a whole Pokey has no personal concern for many of the creatures here. Even now, the fate of perfect strangers doesn't bother him. He simply doesn't possess the empathy to immediately care.

But it'd be a lie to say there's no one he cares about here, and Pokey can only hope Giegue hasn't grown wise to the fact that there's a couple people here and there he socializes with.
