Thirteenth Scale - Visual

[Oh look, it's a little dumb dragon in a big dumb hardhat, a set of blueprints rolled up under his arm.]

So yeah I get that the last several weeks - hey, lets call it, the last month - has sucked pretty bad, but you know what doesn't suck really bad?

Video games~

See, since there's a lot of dumb, empty land around the place, we're taking some of that dumb empty land outside town and making it awesome by putting an arcade there. It should be up and running by this time next month, but hey since this place is lame and not like there's much else to do...

You can come and test some of the machines my boys and I made so far. You know. Get a chance to play a few games for free. I'm a pretty nice guy, so I think I can spare that for you, cause you'll be coming back when it opens in proper next month.

Though if you're gonna send a few bits my way, hey, I don't mind.

Well....kind of made them, is the thing.

[He looks back as he watches the Mr. Saturns amble around.]

The place I was kind of...gave me the ability to make things out of nothing. Even living things, if they were simple enough.

Kind of chose the Mr. Saturns because they're good workers. They work for peanuts and cheese. Literally. That and me letting them put one of their dumb coffee stands in the arcade.

They are your children...

[Also wow Pokey when were you gonna tell him you were a god.]

So they made this place...they are very good.

[He bends down to one of them.]

Thank you for your hard work, children of Pokey.

[His children. That is....certainly not something Pokey had ever thought of before.

He just watches the Mr. Saturns amble about. Truth be told, he hadn't considered too much when he brought these ones into existence. Really, he had just been in need of cheap and easy labor, and the first thing that came to him was 'make Mr. Saturns'. The idea of actually being responsible for them, especially since they seemed to care for themselves so easily, didn't really occur to him.

He'll have to think about that.

Meanwhile, the Mr. Saturn Leatherhead is speaking with was staring at the butterfly that had landed on its noise before the diamond dog comes up to it. The butterfly flies away, the Mr. Saturn watching it fly away before turning back to Leatherhead and gently smooshing it's long pink nose against the diamond dog's.]

MR. SAtUrn woRk HARd, CaN pLAY too, Mr. SAtuRN, BoING! DOIng aLl He CAN fOR You!

[And with that the Mr. Saturn ambles back to its work, or perhaps to just play in flowers nearby. It's a 50-50 chance.]

[Thinking about these kinds of things are good.

But Leatherhead looks at this simple thing, letting it touch his nose before the being walks away. But whilst he converses with it, he thinks how much he is like these Mr. Saturns, a thing that was created merely looking for a reason to live.]

You work hard... all of you.

[He turns to Pokey.]

You should be filled with great pride.

[For a moment, Pokey just keeps watching the silly little pink creatures work and play and mess around, still lost in Leatherhead's words. He snaps back to attention when the diamond dog addresses him, though.]

....Pride. Sure.

[Despite the boy's tendency to aggrandize himself, to make himself bigger than life...so much of it was hot air, especially after Mayfield. Assuredly after Mayfield, and all it had taken out of his sails. To say Pokey no longer felt pride at all would be a terrible lie, but it was easier for him to fall towards being critical of himself than praising himself, all outward appearances aside.]

...I think there's something I should. You know. Tell you.

[He sits down, almost in a dog-like fashion, attentively waiting for Pokey's words. He seemed like a nice person, troubled like him, but a nice person.]

I am listening.

[He can't help but frown a little before he speaks.]

I need to know. Do you know someone calling himself George? He's a little white rat.

[His eyes narrow into slits.]

...I know of a white rat, yes.

...I'm gonna guess you already dont think he's a nice guy. And you're right, he isn't. ....I wasn't either, for a long, long time until I ended up in Mayfield. I guess I hoped that if I could change, he could too. But he hasn't.

So I've had to make a trap for him.

[He bares his teeth.]

I should not have trusted him...

What kind of trap is this place?

...He feeds off negative emotion. Or it...empowers him, I guess. He plans to use this place to build competitiveness and anger between the people there so he can get stronger from their negative emotions and control them through those emotions.

But it doesn't have to work that way. It isn't unstoppable. Because even if he can control that anger? He can be beaten by just...goodness, I guess. By kindness and consideration and sincerity. ...I don't want to have to hurt him, if I can help it. It's why I'm trying to keep him distracted on piddly crap like this I can sabotage and that he has a better chance of failing at then letting him go hog wild.

[He pauses a moment, then looks back out at his 'crew'.]

It's kind of why I have the Mr. Saturns here too, I guess. They can help too.

So you are building this place to distract him.

Are you sure you can contain someone who can feed off such emotions?

[He thinks for a moment. And then?

Shakes his head.]

Only for a little bit. Hopefully I can keep it up.

But I don't know if I can without help. But I've got to try. I...I dunno.

I owe it to people, is all.

You do not need to it alone...I can help...in some way...

[Pokey is quiet for a moment. He's conflicted, in a lot of ways. He wants to do this on his own; he wants to tell people to shut up and leave him be to do this. Just let him do it.

But at the same time? He's grateful for the offer. He smiles, just a small bit.]

Yeah?

What do you think you can do?

[He nods. Sorry Pokey, he has a bit of a helping complex.]

We are friends...I could try to bring him...

I don't think he'll have much trouble coming. He...kind of thinks he's running the place. That's part of it, to keep him here.

...You being here could help anyway. You're one of the few people I've told anything about this. I dunno, I mean. I'm kind of trying to figure out how to do this on the fly. But maybe even if you're just here...we'll figure out what we need to do when the time comes?

[He's still not sure of it himself, doesn't have a great grasp on it. But he's trying.]

[He thinks he gets the general gist.]

I shall be by your side.

When all else fails, I can bite him.
