Scroll 17: Did Somebody Say Birthday? [Accidental visual]

[It's early evening at Saori's household kitchen when the scroll starts. The first face to show up belonged to an orange tabby cat. He blinked and was about to paw at the scroll but his ears pick up a noise and he turned around. Unaware of the recording scroll, Saori had her back turned. Instead she was focused on a calendar and another scroll floating in mid-air. A pen scribbled something on the scroll but hastily crossed it out. She let out a huff and shook her head.]

It's June already, huh? This isn't good. I should've had everything planned and ingredients ordered a while ago but...I think I've finally hit a slump. Maybe macarons would be a good idea this year. It'll be June 15th soon enough.

[She lets out a sigh but manages to put on a small smile.]

Still, to think I'd be turning 100. Now that's a milestone I'd never thought I'd reach and yet that's still young for someone like me.

[While Saori kept thinking out loud, Mana meowed. She turned around and went over to the cat. Maybe what she needed was a break. It was only after a side glance did she notice the scroll next to him. She went slackjaw in horror.]

Gah! How...How long was this thing on?!

[There's a very scraggly-looking daughter over here, mane up in a queue with a bunch of pencils stuck in it, and a bunch of books an' papers behind her. Somepony's been up for awhile studying...]

What do ya mean? Ya don't look almost 100, Mama. Barely look 30...

[She needs to find something for her adoptive mother...but her curiousity is getting the better of her, despite her being tired.]

[Oh yes the study sessions from hell must be back. She remembered those times too well.]

Ah, Neph...I know you've been studying a lot but don't try to over do it. Your health is more important than your studies after all.

[Saori, stop trying to change the subject. Right. She hadn't told her adopted daughter yet.]

Well, to make a long story short, I was born human but eventually I became a goddess. I'm not by any means immortal but I have a super long lifespan so I don't age as fast. It's just hard for me to tell others about this so please forgive me for not telling you sooner.

I guess it was only a matter of time. And don't worry, it's not your fault.

[She pulls up a rectangular cakeboard and scribbles something before magically sticking it to Mana. It reads, "I like to record my mom on the scrolls without her noticing because I think it's funny."]

It's this little guy. I guess it was only a matter of time before he trolled me as well.

[Tadashi can't help but chuckle a little.] Yeah, well...Cats, y'know?

Yeah, that's true. This little guy's a punk alright. He's just lucky the cute factor saves him from time to time. Then again, if it weren't for him, I might have not been able to survive the last world we were in.

Yeah...they can be a pain sometimes, but other times they can make great companions.

[He can't help being curious about that last comment, though.]

They really do. I picked him up when he was a stray kitten that hung around the tea shop I had in the last world. Been with me ever since through the thick and the thin. Let's just say that world wasn't exactly all sunshine and rainbows.

Oh yeah? Yeah, it can be nice to have a friend through times like that.

[Even a furry one.]

Yeah. I know for a fact this guy's a survivor. I guess the best way to summarize the last world I was in was a futuristic post-apocalyptic one. We were brought from different worlds by a group of rebels to aid them in overthrowing the superpower in command. It took us a while but we managed it in the end somehow. Near the end though, I had lost a good chunk of my friends and Mana was the only one I had.

[She'll just leave out the part that included mass bombings, a mutiny on a moon base and dealing with a nuclear winter.]

Oh...geez.

[While he was getting used to the idea of other worlds, knowing that worlds like that could exist was...unnerving, to say the least.]

Sounds like you've both been through a lot...

I guess it was only a matter of time before somepony tried to figure it out...Guess there's no way to convince you not to?

[She scratches her chin in thought. Normally she would be the one to make something but maybe it was time to break tradition.]

Hmm....maybe a small cake wouldn't hurt. Actually you might want to make it a big cake to share with others. Not to mention I know some big eaters here who might ask for seconds.

That's the spirit! Are you gonna have a big party too? It's not every day someone turns a hundred~

That's a good question! I might be able to do another outdoor event at Otsuki. I guess I better start ordering ingredients while I'm at it.

I have to admit... I honestly didn't really think you were that old either. I shouldn't be too surprised though, back home 100 was nearing the end of what life extension tech could get you, but it was certainly possible. I guess someone with your status would get something similar.

Does it bother you that they know now?

Really? From my time, there have been several cases where some humans live to over 100 but they are fairly uncommon. Though given the rate of medical advances and what not, that might change. Gods on the other hand, the average lifespan is about, oh three hundred to maybe four. We're by no means immortal though. While maturing and surviving puberty is about the same rate as humans, aging afterwards slows down significantly. Sure stuff like ambrosia and other foods tied to longevity exists, but it's not a silver bullet from the inevitable.

Well, to be honest, I don't normally celebrate my birthday like a typical one. I guess it must because I don't having that spotlight on me and would rather share the wealth with others. That's why I did extra sales and freebies in the past tea houses I had. Not to mention....I can just imagine some of those local colts and fillies calling me granny now!

[Saori, that last bit might have killed the seriousness right there...Despite that ham, she manages to break a small smile.]

No, it's not every day. What would you like to do for your birthday, anyways?

Well, one of the Pinkie Pies just enabled me to do an outdoor event at Otsuki during the day. And it is wishful thinking but a date in our normal forms would be nice. Though I'll take a date with you in any form regardless.

[Not to mention she sometimes felt bad when there was PDA when Margulis was around in the house even though they do try to keep it to a minimum. Poor guy could use a break.]

It would be nice, but a date anyways I can do. Do you want something during the day or at night?

Well, I can imagine the day will be busy so at night would be great. I mean no one would blame me if I took the next day off, right? Plus, it'd give poor Margy a chance to have the house to himself for once.
