What ho, all! Sorry to be a bother, but I was wondering if anypony knows what it means if you can't catch hold of somepony via these fine little whatsits. There's this fellow, Jay, who's been staying with us on Vantas' farm, but he seems to have disappeared. I mean, I'm not about to go chasing down every fellow who finds an itch to go wandering, but it's been a day or more. There was also another chap I'm having trouble finding. A red fellow with a tiger on his flank by the name of Jan. And then there was another fellow, a very upstanding-looking gent with a rose on the hindquarters going by Tamaki Suou.

All three of them were humans before they were ponies.

[He pauses to ponder.]

Well... Jan might also have been a tiger. I wasn't very clear on the specifics, what with it all being byunbyun due to the zowazowa. Honestly, the cove could do to be a bit more precise about these things. Which does remind me: Are the rest of you actually speaking English? Jan said he wasn't when I mentioned it to him. He said I sounded like I was speaking Japanese, which is a marvelous notion, if utterly mad.

Right, but to the point. Has anypony else noticed their new chums buzzing off for parts unknown sans magical whatsity scroll?

Trust me Bertie, some of the wildest adventures can be found behind boulders and under hedges. Wherever they are this is important.

Well, not yet. We can do it now, though! I've got wings, so any high or hard-to-reach places should probably be place I check. You've got your whatsit. The other Doctor called it a 'sonic screwdriver,' I think? I'm not entirely sure how that's possible, but I'm not one to use screwdrivers much. Are they all sonic-y?

Yes, right, but in any case, could that be used to check in places we can't get to for reasons outside of, well, height?

Yes the Sonic Screwdriver is able to scan for lifeforms. The signal will be harder to pick up on if the other ponies are further away or there's something in between us that will interfere with the energy waves but it should overall be helpful in our search. Luckily I've been scanning enough ponies I can change the settings to search for pony readings instead of just any life form.

If we head into the forest it would be best to go in a group. I've heard many rumors about the place being dangerous.

What sorts of readings can you get off a screwdriver, anyway?

And I think you're right. Ms. Flare Star's mentioned it's horribly dangerous, and Ms. Zecora told me there's a sort of poisoned joke hanging about in there. I really shouldn't like to imagine what that could do to a fellow.

The Sonic can pick up on all sorts of energy readings and identify different organisms and materials. Everything from simple ingredients identification to recognizing the presence of time manipulation signs. Never underestimate a good Sonic.

I'd like to know more about that poisonous joke. Sounds horrible to get but very interesting. I haven't gotten to talk in detail with any one about the forest. Would either of the ladies you mentioned have more to say on the subject?

Ms. Flare Star's a bit, erm... well, she told me to stop sending ponies to bother her, but I think she's just a bit rough around the edges. I'm sure she wouldn't mind an intelligent chappie like yourself asking after the dangers of the Everfree Forest. Ms. Zecora said he'd be offering lessons on how to avoid the worst of the woods sometime, so I fancy that means she's amenable to helping a chap out.
