Twelfth Bolt (Visual)

*The background of this post is definitely Alastor's castle, but all that's visible in the shot is a strange creature that's oddly blood colored. Hanging around its neck is a sign that reads in type-printed font,

Hi, I'm one of Alastor's bloodgoyles.
I'm harmless, please do not shoot me.
(Ps. Blood given willingly.)

It waves a claw at the screen, gives a brief screech like a predatory bird, and the feed cuts out. So yeah, that's a thing.*
superstylishsquid: (Would you look at that.)

You'd...be right in that assumption. Most people in the business of making demonic constructs just kill people for the blood.

*Oh boy, talking about magic geekery.*

It's part of the same failsafe that keeps them from becoming overwhelming if something takes control and turns them against me. When they're hit with a magical attack, the spell is temporarily interrupted. They turn to stone and the connection pauses until the bloodgoyle re-animates.

It's this more than anything else that leads to the instinctual reaction against blood magic, back home - that and the issues with sympathy.

[MAGIC GEEKERY WOO!]

That... would do it. A simple contingency; the trouble would be getting the spell to reactivate.

I've never worked with constructs, to be honest. That was more the style of Qari- of my world's Rarity. Excuse me.

I don't see why it should be a problem when the mage actually bothers to ask permission to take the blood, though. It's easy to avoid real damage if the donor is willing.

The failsafe is on a timer. There's a secondary spell in place that preserves the first and then re-activates it several seconds after the magical assault stops. The real problem is that the failsafe also activates when it encounters an unfamiliar type of attack and the spells were developed before a lot of modern weaponry.
