Entry 009 [Visual] Nightmare Night Costume? Plus Private to Bon Bon

Does anyone know where I could get a costume in my size? I'm afraid I have no idea of what I should even be... This holiday is completely unfamiliar to me.

This might be rather short notice, but do you think you could make a rather large order for me before the Nightmare Night party?
I was hoping to bring enough candies to share with everyone...

... What is a costume anyways? I've gathered it's something to change your appearance but other than that...

[He looks a bit perplexed.]

When someone wears a costume...it's more than just a change of clothes. Which might seem strange, because we don't wear clothing all the time.

It's an attempt to present yourself as something or someone else, as a sort of entertainment. For example, I once wore clothing to resemble the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. His style of dress isn't common at all in my home era, so with that and the iconic pipe the character carried, it stood out.

Others dress as mythological beings. Witches, vampires. Or even just other creatures, like bats.

Does that make any sense?

... I think so...

[Even though he had no idea who this 'Sherlock Holmes' person was, he did think he got the idea.]

... Like a play?

[While he'd never seen a full play before at home, he had managed to snoop and observe a few practices where some of the players had worn funny clothes for it.]

We're not really putting on a play. There's no script. But some people will act like the characters they dress up as---like a vampire might fit their mouth with fangs and sneak up on others, pretending to bite their necks.

You have a large and imposing appearance, so there's a lot you can do. We just have to think of it.

Oh! I think I get it...

[Well, he understands the what, not so much the why. However he's willing to try it, though his ears droop at the mention of his size and intimidation factor.]

... Do I have to be something scary? [He'd had quite enough of that from before he ended up in Equestria.]

No, not at all. Sherlock Holmes isn't scary!

[Billy grins]

Is there anything coming to mind? Something you'd have fun playing with?

I don't know... um... maybe...

[Skyfire just looks at himself and shrugs, unable to figure out what, or even who he could possibly dress as.]

Do you have any suggestions? I really have no idea...

Can I come to visit? I have some props I can bring over for inspiration.

Sure... I'm at the shelter though, not at my home.

[He's been working on stuff, but at least he's not working till he drops again.]

Would it be easier if I came to you?

My little inventing shack's on the southern outskirts. You should have plenty of space here.

I can be there in a little while?

[It might take him a bit of time, since he walks instead of flies, but it's not too long before he's looking around and hoping he'd found the right place.]

Hi!

[Billy pops right out, dragging a pile of various objects behind him. He glances at the items, then at Skyfire, then back again.]

I'm sure we can find a costume for you in here somewhere. You said you didn't want scary...would you want something simple, or more elaborate? Easy to move around in?

[He dives right into the pile and start searching, his tail sticking up being the only sign he's there.]

[Skyfire chuckles a bit as he watches Billy dive into the pile of stuff. It reminds him so much of himself before he crashed on earth.]

Honestly? I have no idea what so ever.

... As long as it's not scary, I'm not sure it matters?

Hmm. We could make use of your wings, I think---are you feeling better? I don't want to disturb any injuries.

I think it's just sore muscles left... I've been working on getting them stretched and back in shape, but I'm not going to be flying anywhere for at least another couple of weeks.

[He was also working on putting some weight back on since he was still a bit on the thin side.]

Then I'll be gentle. Nothing too elaborate.

Hmm. What about...a fire spirit? It'd just be a light costume, some elaborate patterns stitched on. You'd look spectacular, I think, especially if I can get one of my tricks to work.

... If you think it would work? I'm hopeless when it comes to working with fabric though.

Granted... I can do metal and wood work, so maybe I can trade?

[He wasn't expecting Billy to do all the work on the costume, so maybe a trade of services was in order? Somehow he suspected that he'd refuse to be paid in bits if he offered.]

Let me know what supplies will be needed? I'm sure I can find them somewhere...

We can make it largely metal costume. It would only need fabric pieces for accents.

[Billy was already plotting, conjuring a picture in his mind.]

It'll be armor. Golden-looking, preferably, with crimson cloth pieces and accents.

[He thinks about it for a moment, nods, and then grins.]

I think that could work... Can you sketch out a rough drawing of what you have in mind? I should be able to get the metal for it.

[Skyfire pauses and then asks] Do you have a costume yet? [Because while Skyfire had no clue what he would have dressed as without Billy's help... He actually had the spark of an idea for what Billy could wear. Sure, it would be a semi matching costume... but... he wanted to do something to thank him for the help.]

I can.

[Billy's finally good enough with his levitation to control a pencil, so it isn't long before a rough sketch appears. He grins and shows it off.]

And...actually, I haven't thought about it for myself. I'll be heading back to the drawing board, huh?

[Tilting his head and watching Billy draw, he can't help but grin back when it's done.]

I think I like that.

[His grin gets a bit bigger.]

Well... I had a thought about that...

[He looks around for something that he can scratch out a rough sketch on, since that pencil was far too small for him to hold.]

[Billy smiles and offers a thicker stump, with a writing point on the end.]

Does this help?

[It's a bit awkward, but he does manage to get a hold on the bigger piece.]

It should...

[He spends a bit of time fiddling around and sketching, ending up with a rough sketch of Billy in what looks like an old fashioned set of fantasy style armor.]

What do you think of that?

[Billy considers it for a moment, then nods enthusiastically.}

I'll do it! Now I just need to draw up specific blueprints and get to work on forging.

[He levitates his measuring tape and adjusts his glasses.]

This shouldn't take too long.

[Skyfire shakes his head.]

If you'll draw up the blueprints and measurements... I can do most of the forging for the both of ours if you'll help with the details and fiddly work?

[He was fireproof and good with metals after all.]

That'll work out perfectly.

[Billy is really glad he picked up an extra-long measuring tape. It wraps itself around Skyfire in a few places, with Billy stopping to scratch out measurements every now and then.]

I'm a little excited now, honestly. It'll be by far the best costume I've ever had. We should win something!

[Blink, blink, blink... and a confused look.]

Win? You win something for dressing up?

[It's the first he's heard of that.]

I'm not sure, but back home, we usually had costume contests for Halloween. With prizes for the winners.

And if there is, we have a fair shot.

[He snaps the measuring tape excitedly, scratching down a few more things before starting to twist it around himself.]

Oh.

[He shrugs now that the tape measure isn't floating around him anymore.]

If there was ever anything like that on my earth, I've never heard of it. [Not that anyone would have invited him anyways.]

It only happens once a year, so it's not really a big occasion.

But we'll do our best!

[He was so pleased with himself that he ended up rather tangled in the measuring tape. It took a minute to get himself back out, oops.]

Maybe we can even make a grand entrance to the party.

[He looks confused, but nods. He's not sure how organics celebrate, so he'll just take Billy's word for it. Skyfire does chuckle when Billy gets tangled in the tape measure and tries to help him out of it.]

Er... Grand entrance?

[That was something he wasn't quite too sure on. He was never a very flashy person, even before he ended up on Earth... even less now... but... if Billy really wanted to show off, he supposed that he could grin and bear it.]

We can walk in with our heads held high. Like we're really performing a role, right?

I suppose so... I've never done anything like this before, so I'm not sure what's appropriate to be totally honest.

Then I'll lead the way, don't worry.

[Now free from the tangled tape, Billy happily rolled up his scroll and gave Skyfire a friendly nudge.]

But I think it's time I got started here. There's so much to do and so little time before Halloween---er, Nightmare Night.

[A chuckle and a friendly nudge in return... plus a big dragon nose snuffling at the plans. Being careful not to wreck them of course.]

Come on... show me the plans. I'm not going to let you do all the work.

All right, all right!

[Billy laughs and uncurls them for him.]

There. There's our roadmap. Now let's do this!

Hmmmm....

[He gives the plans a once over, then grins.]

I think I have just the metal for both of our outfits... and I can provide the flame too.

Perhaps my workshop would be the best for at least the basic forging? It's still nothing fancy, but it's big enough for the both of us and the work...

Then that's where we're headed. It'll be done before we know it!

[Billy rolled the plans up, grinned, and almost bounced toward the exit.]
