experiment 4: visual
[Oh hey, it's Doc again! So soon? Yup. But he looks a little...deflated. His mane's not quite as wild as usual, and the goggles are gone. He's actually set aside the work for a few minutes---but not for long, as everyone will hear.]
First, I want to assure everyone that all clock and mask orders will still be completed on time, as promised, but I'm afraid I must close to new orders for the next two days. I have a bit of a personal matter to sort out---and as it affects some of you as well, I'll go ahead and announce it.
Marty McFly is no longer with us in Equestria. If he was in possession of anything of yours, feel free to come by the---my apartment in the Commune to claim it. And before you ask, absolutely no one is weaseling their way into claiming the guitar, so don't bother trying it.
[For a moment, he looks lost, and then it looks like he might say more...but he changes his mind with a shake of his head and quietly shuts it off.]
[private to those in the know---Tadashi, Dandy, Pollo, and Andrew]
I'll be able to turn my full attention to the time mission now. Expect the field-tests to be soon, if you'd like to participate.

OH GOD DAMN IT!!
How the hell can this be happening?! I was so close, so friggin' close, he couldn't say his damn catch phrase just ONE time, are you shitting me?! You'd think with all the shit that goes down here, he'd be saying it left and right, but no! It was the chance of the lifetime, WASTED, and I've never been so miserable in my life, baby.
This is it, this is truly horse-based hell. Are you happy, you stupid pony bastards?! You give a man a dream and you just stomp all over it like the lone dropped pancake at BooBies, so sweet and succulent, but never able to fulfill it's delicious destiny.
[Visual]
...well, yes, I miss him too. And I'm sorry I couldn't accomplish that for you.
But you never did explain why that was so important to you.
[Visual]
[He can't break the fourth wall on you just yet, baby.]
[Visual]
[Wink. Nudge. Except less winking because he isn't feeling playful]
[Visual]
[Or blow up, but details.]
I trust you enough to have your shit together.
[Visual/private]
[He smiles wistfully]
Guess this means you get shotgun after all.
[Visual/private]
[private text]
[Nope, not over it.
...though Discord is aware enough of the petty cruelty of this to lock it so no one he cares about sees.]
[private text]
I'm working on it.
[not here]
It isn't really that he had anything against Marty anyway. He just did it to be mean to Doc. It certainly wasn't to make Doc feel like he did before, because Doc is just a stupid jerk and does not have the power to make Discord feel bad about anything. Because Discord is awesome.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.]
[private visual]
[Because sorry, but that just sounds like you're going to bury yourself in your work to an unhealthy degree.]
I am so sorry I thought I hit this [private visual]
[Visual]
Maybe he uh...went into someone's guitar.
[He's reaching, he knows.]
[Visual]
Believe me, I think I'd know. His scroll's gone.
[Visual]
[His head sinks.]
Did he say anything before he left?
[Visual]
[The two boys were close, weren't they? Doc bows his head in consideration.]
But I do know that you were a dear friend to him. He was quite relieved to see you rescued from the guitar, and though he could be as exasperated as he sometimes is with me...he enjoyed your company.
[Visual]
Wait...he really thought I was a friend? His friend?
[Visual]
I'm certain of it.
[Visual]
I mean, he's gone. I shouldn't be surprised but...goddamnit.
It sucks.
[Visual]
[He looks over the things he's gathered, considering.]
Do you skateboard at all?
[Visual]
Not at all.
Sory.
[Visual]
[He rummages some more, looking hopeful for a moment.]
I have some tapes, if you'd like those?
[Visual]
[It's something and a nice little reminder.]
I don't even care what's on them, I'll take them.
[Visual]
I somehow doubt it given our pasts, but should Marty ever return...we'll have to reassemble these items quickly. I don't want him thinking I've given everything away as if he's dead.
[Oh. Oh dear. He really shouldn't think about that, not with all the uncertainties that hang over their heads.]
[Visual]
[He doubts it.]
It's just something nice to go "oh hey, I'm not a total loser."
[Visual]
Why would anyone think that you were?
[Visual]
[Visual]
Loser is an exceptionally strong word. For anyone to be so arrogant as to declare that another person has no hope of achieving a meaningful life is some of the most narrow-minded ignorance I have ever seen. And it happens entirely too often.
Everyone has the potential to be great. You're no exception.
[Visual]
...you think?
I mean, no offense. But I'm not...a superhero or a time traveler or...whatever the hell Discord is. Ok, I'm glad I'm not a Discord.
[Visual/Private]
[Yeah, he's just casually admitting to it. But with how close Cameron and Marty were, he has to have known already, right?]
And we certainly don't need any more Discords in the world. But believe me when I say that all you need to make a difference in this world is an open mind and an open heart.
[Visual/Private]
If that's all it takes, then uh...guess I better go into brain surgery.
[Laughs at himself.]
[Visual/Private]
[Visual/Private]
[Visual/Private]
Don't worry, it won't be.
[Visual/Private]
But whatever, I'm sure you must be feeling worse I mean...Marty was your friend? Student? Right?
[Visual/Private]
I've lived and worked alone for most of my life---friendship was somewhat of a foreign concept to me. It all changed one morning, when I found some punk kid snooping in my garage---Marty. He was just about the first person in 30 years to be interested in my work and willing to give me a chance, so I hired him as my assistant.
We had more in common than I ever could've guessed, and in time he became a friend. My first real friend...and because he had faith in me when no one else was willing to give me the time of day, I've accomplished everything I have now. Not a whole hell of a lot, but. Enough.
But I'll be all right. He taught me how to reach out to others...and we always seem to find each other again eventually, even against impossible odds.
[Visual/Private]
Guess that's why being here sucks. There's no way for Ferris to call me up and tell me to get my ass into gear. You must be feeling the same, huh?
[Visual/Private]
[He looks on sympathetically.]
Yes. I take it Ferris is someone very close to you?
[Visual/Private]
He gets on my nerves, he pushes me around, he acts like he's got it all figured out...so yeah, of course he's my friend.
[Visual/Private]
[He smiles fondly, remembering a few squabbles with Marty back in Hill Valley.]
But they also have our backs when times are toughest.
[Visual/Private]
Hope he's doing—nah, he's ok. He's Ferris.
I guess what I'm hoping is: I hope he misses me. Serves him right.
[Visual/Private]
I hope I'll have the chance to meet him someday. He would undoubtedly be interesting.
[visual]
You gonna be okay?
[visual]
I had hoped we could solve this mystery together, but...it wasn't to be. Nothing to worry about, I've spent the vast majority of my life in solitude. Not that it's complete isolation as before, many of you have shown me kindness and I'm grateful, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't sting a little.
[He shakes his head.]
I apologize. It seems I'm having difficulty 'putting a sock in it'.
[visual]
[visua/private]
[Curie wanders over just then, and he carefully gathers her against him. Thank you, pup---he pats her gently, head bowed in thought.]
My offer about the time trip still stands, but if you're interested, there's quite a bit I have to tell you. I can't make the same mistakes I once made with Marty.
