1st Diversion - Action
[Now that she's fairly well convinced that she isn't dead and this is some bizarre afterlife/her mind's death throws, Surprise has found it kind of a necessity to get busy. If she keeps from work or from doing something for too long, she inevitably begins to ponder. And just as inevitably pondering tends to force her mind to go down some dark, dark roads she's rather keep from even setting hoof on. The question for a bit had been what to do with her time. She'd already decided going back to Cloudsdale and the Weather Factory wasn't worth it, and that for the most part she wasn't sure she could take going back and seeing what it was like in this world. But something she did know was that she needed to make money. And it was a few days ago that a plan started to form.
In the square where many of the ponies have shops and fruit stands Surprise has started her own. It's a small little wooden stand, not much different from a kid making a lemonade stand, though it at least seems more sturdily built. The sign on the top of the stand, written in white paint, reads "REPAIR AND PAWN SHOP".
Anyone bothering to really look at the sign will notice in much smaller and neater letters under the main sign has been written "All sales final prices subject to change". It's not particularly reassuring, but hey at least she said it outright. Sort of.
As for the stand itself, it seems to have several very simple mechanical goods scattered on it and around it: alarm clocks, watches, a toaster or two, some of those stupid mechanical bobbing birds that drink water. Most of it was junk Surprise had found around town and managed to repair. It had, in fact, been finding and repairing it that gave her the idea to even try this.
As for Surprise herself, she's wearing an incredibly loud purple suit and tophat. She isn't exactly the best salesman, however, as her plan to draw attention seems to just be pointing at random ponies passing by on the street and shouting.
Right now she seems to be trying to pass off one of the many, many little mechanical drinking birds she has.]
Hey, you know what you need? You need this little guy right here! Wow, just look at him go! I mean, I guess you could see him drinking water if I actually had a glass of water, but if I did oh man he'd be drinking that water so much it'd be crazy!
...Okay, so you don't like the one little mechanical bird. Okay, okay! How about....
Two mechanical birds! Wow! Can you believe how crazy it's getting here?
[Her sales pitch could use a bit of help.]

[Thinking...thinking...examining these more...]
You know...I noticed that no one's coming here, but it might just be the way your presentation's focused. Maybe instead of simply selling these items you fixed, you could sell your skills in fixing and refurbishing things? You did a good job on these, after all. And everyone has things they would like repaired, right?
no subject
...You really think so? I just kind of thought they'd be more interested in buying something. You know, like this!
[She just brings another one of those little birds forward.]
I mean come on man who wouldn't love having one of these!
[The message is that she has too damn many of them and needs to get rid of them.]
no subject
Well, I'm not sure. But...maybe you can use what you have to make something people would want even more than simply these birds and clocks.
[At this, Don points to the phonograph.]
For example, I'm sure people probably get tired of having to crank their players to play a record, so maybe there's something in these other items that can help with fixing that problem.
no subject
[She tilts her head as she trains her sights on the phonograph, looking it over.]
I never really thought about it, you know? I'm more of a...just more of a wrench pony really! Innovating isn't something I really do. Just...do what I'm told!
no subject
[He nods.]
You could definitely consider it while you're here. Its as my master would say: one of the only ways to get out of a tight box is to invent your way out.
But even as a wrench pony I bet there's a lot to do.
[Seriously, look at him. He's thinking of things for him to do, already building things in his head. He's kind of...odd like that.]
no subject
She watches the weird pony turtle inspecting the merchandise she has on the table. What a weird guy.]
You know...you find something you like, it's on the house.
[This is definitely one of the more pleasant conversations she's had. And she's trying to be courteous, even though it's odd for her.]
no subject
Then he notices one of the drinking birds. Its a pink and yellow one with blue eyes, all of its colors faded and with a tiny bit of dirt on it. He suddenly seems a little misty-eyed, almost somber but also somehow wistful, as he speaks again.]
Is...it ok if I take this one then?
no subject
[That's all? Surprise expected you to take something more. Still, she smiles.]
Hey, sure man! I got dozens of those things I oughta pay you for taking it!
no subject
This'll do. Thank you...er...
...I'm sorry. I didn't catch your name?
no subject
So...what's yours, man?
no subject
no subject
Still...it's odd. She usually doesn't get to talk to others much, pony or not. It's nice. And a big part of her yells at her that it'd be a good idea to stop the conversation.
But that isn't why she pauses for so long. The reason she pauses is to finally get this out.]
Uh. It's nice....you know. Nice to meet you Don.
[It's odd. When she meets someone it's usually just a matter of business when someone joins the factory, or it's....well. It's a foal or filly who failed their flight exam. Those meetings? Not exactly what she'd call nice.
She's thankful, almost, for just actually getting to talk to someone productively for a little bit.]
You know, you make anything or find anything interesting machine wise...I'd like to see it.
[It's barely audible, but she chokes the words out slightly. It's been so long since she's had a normal conversation where she could feel at ease, let alone talking about machines, and it's hard not to be a little emotional about it.]
no subject
[He gives her a smile.]
You too, yeah? I'd like to see what else you fix up.
no subject
[She just doesn't know where to go at the moment. She's too used to being shunned, or walked away from or insulted by the other ponies back home to the point that she's beyond rusty at actual conversation. That she'd given up on trying, in order to avoid being spit at or threatened.
Not that she could blame the other ponies.
She blinks her eyes a couple times, just out of confusion as she fumbles with her words.]
I'll make sure to let you know. Don't uh...know how much time I'll have though. I'm busy, see!
[Not quite, considering how her business doesn't particularly seem to be drawing many people in.]
no subject
[Nod. He seriously did. Starting up a business was hard work, after all!]
Well, whenever you have the time then!
no subject
Hey. Uh.
I know it may be weird here or something but. You'll get used to it.
no subject
no subject
I live here, or a here, and it's still weird for me. It's just wrong, you know?
[And wrong in ways she doesn't really want to describe or talk about. It's hard, because the place feels like it's right, and the place she came from is wrong.]
...Sorry if I'm keeping you man. I'm sure you probably got all kinds of other places to be.
no subject
[At this, he looked down, his hoof pawing the ground.]
You're not wasting my time.
no subject
Surprise wonders if she's even meant to be here. Or has the right to be here. But she'd be afraid to ever talk about it.
Aw crap. She's making the turtle-pony nervous. She didn't mean that. And she actually feels a little bad about it.]
Hey. Uh. You okay?
no subject
[Not nervous. Just. Wistful? Shooting the breeze? Lost in thought for a moment? Something other than nervous.]
Oh! Yeah, I'm ok. But like I said, you're not wasting my time.
no subject
So you know...you work with machines, I work with machines...but you kinda sound like you know more than I do man.
You think sometime you could like...I dunno...teach me some of what you know or something?
no subject
I sure can! I'd love to.
no subject
[She does mean that. It's just that she's also confused. Did she just...make a friend? She really isn't certain.
If she did...she kind of likes it. Even if she's never really had a friend before.]
Oh. Uh. I better get to work you know! All this junk, it ain't gonna sell itself!
[Surprise: conversational master.]
no subject
[He smiles.]
I'll see you later!
