[This holiday season, the scroll feed is proud to present... a bleary-eyed sky-blue pony with white bed hair that encompasses his entire head. Groggily, he pushes himself semi-upright and smacks his lips, blinking off his sleep.]

...hhh...where...where in the world am I, do you suppose?...Archimedes? Archimedes, are you about somewhe- oh.

[Enough cognisance has been regained that he suddenly notices his hoof, and he examines it for a moment.]

...mm. That's odd. I don't remember turning into a shetland pony. Let's see now...

[Finally getting up, the old equine trots around a bit, giving himself a once over.]

Beard's still here, unusual, that. The rest seems OH! Oh, that had better not be a tattoo down there. Ngh... won't rub off. No, that won't do, I'm not going through that nonsense again. Now, where I w...Hmm. Glasses still there, that's good. Pointy hat? Yes, yes, that seems to be in good nick. Bit crumpled, but nothing a goo- ...by george, is that a horn on my head?!

Well, let's see. Now, part of me is a little bit curious to test the limits of my current capabilities. Seeing what spells I can or can't cast as a unicorn that I could as a human. But then again, that could be a little too risky.

Perhaps it's better if I do a little research. See what spells are in vogue here in Equestria, so to speak. I, uh, don't suppose you know where I can find some information on unicorn spells?

(Luckily, the unicorn he's speaking to is basically the incarnation of magic itself.)

I have a few books on the subject I can loan you. I'm also an avid magic researcher and practitioner, so I can lend a hoof or two.

[So, that was that, then. Once the communication closes, Merlin goes toddling off to the town square, admiring the various sights and sounds along the way. Then, once he finds the fountain, all that's left to do is look around for the young purple unicorn from the scroll.]

(It doesn't take her long to get there. Admittedly, part of it was the speed boost fangirling often gives, so in very little time, the aforementioned purple unicorn trots up to the wizard.)

Questions, well, let's see here now... Well, first of all, I'm a little curious about your recognising me. Err, not the fact that there are books about me and the lad, no, I'm well aware of that. But, erm, are you from another world yourself? Or are there stories on the legends of camelot even in this peculiar world?

Not so much this world, but certainly others. As you've likely noticed, everything here is significantly...less human. There are mostly ponies here in Equestria, though we do have our share of dragons, griffins and the like. It does share many similarities with human worlds, though.

As for myself...I am a natural pony, but I'm not from this world. Alternate universes and such. It's a frequent theme here.

Mm, so I'm gathering.

Erm, with that said, I don't suppose you know if there are any other species considered...erm...

[Now, this is a delicate question, and Merlin needs a moment or two to consider its phrasing]

...that is to say, are all the animal species in this world capable of speech and-or civilisation, or are there some that are considered more...erm, ah...'animalistic'?
